The Queen's Men

I was really upset I was not allowed to see the Queen immediately. They would not even take a message to her, saying she was busy. And oh God, the rumours! I was sitting in the Great Hall and already I have heard people talking about things. Very upset, I got some drinks for myself, and proceeded to steadily drink, trying to stem my anger and irritation. I was already four cups down, when someone came and sat besides me. "Good evening!" I said, slurring my words, hardly noticing who it was. "Who are you?" I peered at him.

It was one of those evenings when having a little too much to drink seemed the only source of possible entertainment to be had. I felt no want to write poetry, my mood was all over the place. So when I saw a pissed looking Smeaton, I immediately had a goblet of wine poured for me before sitting next to him. "Mark, it's me you old fool!" I laughed, before gulping down a good deal of wine, "The night is still so young, surely you can't be so drunk!"

"Who is drunk?" I demanded belligerently. "I am not drunk. Of course, I know who you are. You are Tom. Silly of you not to know. How has life been treating you, my friend?"I took a deep draught of my drink, and heard another person giggling near me. Probably talking about the Queen." I glared at them, and took another sip.

"My mistake, of course you're not drunk.." I jokingly agreed, as I continued to intoxicate myself. "How has life been treating me? Well, it could be better It could have all been so different you know, if only..." I felt the drink start to work it's magic, but I stopped myself from speaking dangerous words "But yet, Mark, it could be worst. I shouldn't complain!" I chuckled as I began to feel a little giggly, "And you, my friend?"

"I had been ill." I informed him. "But all right now." I was by now straining to hear what the people were talking about. "Shhhh ... listen." I told him in a whisper. "And then he yelled at her ... leave them in peace ... her time is over ... Boleyn downfall ..." Phrases floated down to us as I listened. "That is the Queen they talk about so disrespectfully."

I felt my heart physically sink as Mark relayed what he thought was being spoke around him. "No, Mark. They don't say such things....they cant be...THEY CAN'T BE!" I yelled, although little around took much notice. I felt emotions run within me, made ten times more powerful by the drink. "Mark, I fear for her. Anne..I fear for her." I whispered into his ear, though my words were somewhat slurred.

"Shush!" I remarked as he started yelling, even though no one paid any attention. Two drunk men at this time in the evening was not a surprising thing, especially since the king had not made an appearance anywhere. "I fear for her too. Have you heard the King seems to have taken another woman? What could he possibly lack in the Queen?" I was rather shocked at such treachery by the King. "After all those he put aside to have her!"

I closed my eyes to shut out what I was being forced to hear. I wanted these rumors to remain just that, I didn't have to believe there was any solid ground to them. But the terrible truth is that they seem to be sound. "Why would he favor anyone over Anne! Never has there been such perfection.." I looked through blurred vision at those around us. My mind was all the more suspicious now, I saw each one of them chuckling and grinning between themselves..were they joking and laughing at Anne's expense? "..If there be a lady who the King is favoring over our beloved Queen; I hope some terrible misfortune may become of that lady. A fatal disease perhaps." I spoke somewhat darkly.

"The pox!" I elaborated grimly, matching his mood. Lowering my voice, I added, "And the King should catch the French disease, the way he goes on. No respect for the poor Queen, who has done everything for his sake. Why, I even hear she gives alms to the poor and is helping the King with the reformation. But no, he thinks her sole duty is to give him a son and heir." I shook my head sadly.

"Careful Mark of what you say." I quickly interrupted, "If anyone were to overhear what you just said..." I said subtly, although in truth I agreed with his words. I used to have such great respect for His Majesty, although he took away what I most desired, but I withheld a high opinion of the King as I was certain he would treat Anne better than any other man could. Better than I could. Now, however, it seems she is neglected. "If only history could have been different, Mark. If only Anne did not catch our King's attention. I would have treated as the sole light of my world...if only." I again whispered, a feeling reflecting pain and sorrow beginning to grab hold. These days seem to get darker and darker. Lord knows how Anne must feel.

"I know! I would do all in my power to protect her, and keep her safe. She is the best woman ever." I did not talk about how I dreamed she would flirt with me as she did with some of the other nobles. But I was merely a commoner, and perhaps not worthy of her notice. Yet, just a look! "If only ..." I echoed, my thoughts of delectable things I could do with the Queen.

Anne perhaps knows little of the grate affection some of her courtiers hold for her in their hearts. Or perhaps she simply puts it to the back of her mind, and rightly so, for she is wife to the King. However, Mark clearly had feelings that resembled mine. I leaned in close to his ear, cupping my hand around it - before I whispered as softly as I could. "Do you love her, Mark? You do, don't you?"

I nodded, unable to say a word. "Truly, madly, deeply." I replied after I managed to get back my breath. "You love her too, don't you? But you have a chance. I will never get noticed because of my birth." I shook my head sadly. "But that is how it should be. As long as I am allowed to serve her, I will feel privileged."

"I do love her. I do." I again looked around slightly nervously, but our drunken posture seemed to remove any interest or suspicion from the courtiers whom looked our way. I moved awkwardly when Mark declared that I had a chance, If His Majesty was to grow tired of Anne I see it very unlikely that he would simply divorce her and ease his grasp around her so that she could simply fall into my arms. "We are not privileged. We are cursed. We are cursed with these thoughts that so clearly pain us."

"Not much to do but bear it with fortitude." I nodded and refilled his cup and mine. And wine is the best soother of pain." By this time, I was hardly aware of what I was saying, but the pain of knowing how Anne was suffering was not blunted with the wine. "Drink some more. It will offer you some more perspective." I laughed.

"Yes, a better perspective is certainly needed." I laughed, taking the goblet. I stared for a moment into my reflection that was portrayed in the dark, red wine. Realizing that If I allow these feelings I have openly admitted overwhelm me; then the dark red color that I see will not be wine. But blood. Even in my drunken state, I acknowledged it as clear warning.
